Sheet music was the first type of music. In around 1894 sheet music publishers ran the music industry. The first music video that came about was when a publisher had hired some performers to promote his song. They projected a series of still images on a screen simultaneously. This was known as illustrated song. Today many music videos still use still images accompanying a song as their music video.
Soon after when sound films where invented in 1926 many bands vocalists and dancers where featured on these short films. These films where usually 6 minutes long with animated backgrounds in with the performer performing the song. This is seen as the earliest type of music video.
When music videos where a common thing for song promotion there where TV shows dedicated to showing these to help boost music sales. In the UK ‘Top of the Pops’ began in 1970.
In 1981, the U.S. video channel MTV launched, airing "Video Killed the Radio Star" and beginning an era of 24-hour-a-day music on television. Many artists such as Madonna owe most of their success to MTV, for cleverly conducting great and appealing videos. Music videos have been often suggested as silent film, also giving artists to mimic earlier artists in imagery.
Over time….
Over time videos have become more and more available to buy and watch. They have come from being non existent to very popular and readily available to just about everybody.
Sheet music publishers used to just use still images to create ‘videos’, but now inexpensive recording equipment and editing software is available. This allows just about any artist to create a video for their music and make it and appealing visual with the use of editing software.
Videos have become more and more high tech with many techniques used to create very unique and eye-catching videos. Over the period of 1992-2004 many people specialized in making music videos and this is the time when directors began to rise in the mainstream music video business. Each director had their own unique vision for every music video they directed.
From 2005 to date the internet became a place to watch these videos. So now longer do you have to just watch TV to get music videos, the internet can provide the same facility. But on the internet the music videos have become more accessible, as you can now download them for a small fee. Where as on TV you had to wait for the particular video to come on again. But when downloaded it gives you freedom to watch when ever and where ever.
1999-2001 Napster launched. Its software dedicated to downloading music and videos for a small fee. This was brilliant for getting music in a way other than a hard copy on a CD. This new way of getting music created more income for artists as when a customer downloaded and paid for a song or video a small part of the fee when to the artist and to the software company. This created a larger market for music purchasing.

Still images shown simultaneously were the way it all started, but technology has advanced over time allowing us to use moving images. We can use computers and software to edit the recording to create many different effects ECT. The use of editing is the best technology advance as this can enhance the recorded film creating a more appealing video, which in the long run can create more sales of the song for the artist.
