Advert Deconstruction.

Now as a group we need to create an advert. This advert needs to advertise and inform people of our digi-pack.
Firstly we will individually research existing digi- pack adverts of our chosen genre. I have chosen to deconstruct 2 adverts from a leading magazine dedicated to this genre of music, 'Kerrang'.

YouMeAtSix
Advert Deconstruction.

The person in the advert is a middle-aged man with wings. They are white Caucasian, even though this is a black and white image of the male it is clear he is Caucasian. The male is middle class. I can tell this, as he looks smart with his trench coat and white top, this is to smart for the stereotypical lower class citizen. But this is also not smart enough for a stereotypical upper class citizen.

The clothing codes tell me that this is a stylish male, very casual but smart which is the fashion for men these days, this shows me that this is a current to date image. You can’t see a facial expression on the male in the advert as he has his head down. But judging from the title and the fact he is like this makes me think that he is upset/ down about something, most likely the fact that he is the underdog. His posture contributes and connotes the underdog title, as the male isn’t centered of facing forward, also he is looking down which shows a sense of embarrassment or being ashamed.

Stereotypes being represented are the smart casually dressed indie boy. This is a stereotype as this image of the male shows him clothing, which is the style of a stereotypical listener of this genre of music.

The whole advert is in colours but the person on the left is in black and white, which makes him stand out. Also the lack of colours in the person connotes the title of the song, as being dull in colour is the meaning behind underdog, as the underdog has nothing over the top dog, and in this case the underdog isn’t even in colour. The leaves and flowers in the top corner have been cropped to look as though they are over growing on to the advert. This makes the black and white figure look even duller; emphasizing the meaning behind the song title.

All the elements of the advert are in focus, and are all visible. The background has a lot of arrows in the background and some are faded/blurred a little. I feel this is connoting being an underdog, and blending into the background and not standing out; which is a good contrast to the leaves and flowers in the top corner being colourful and proponent.

There is no real issue or reasoning behind the lighting of the image, as this image isn’t a photograph, it’s a cartoon/ drawing. So the lighting is just normal standard lighting being shown on the trousers of the male and to highlight the features on his wings ECT.

The title of the song relates to the pictures very well as the flowers and leaves are a contrast to the meaning of the title. Also the male figure is clearly connoting the title of the song very well.

This advert is addressing anyone who likes this genre of music and this particular band. I can tell this as the bands name is in a very large typeface compared to the other words, to make it stand out. Also this advert is addressing anyone who uses modern technology to get music, as there is information on how to download this song on software called ITunes, which is a modern way of getting music.

The typefaces used are all the same colour to keep some consistency flowing through the advert making it look uniformed and professional. Also the title of the song is in the same font that features on many of this band singles.

The product doesn’t appear in the advert as the actual product is a song and so cannot be illustrated in this advert. So a small amount of vital information is featured on the advert about how to get the song and where to get it from.

The background and colour signify a sense of being old and tatty and maybe even dirty. This is shown thought the use of the discolored paper effect as the background with the band name on other paper attached with what looks like tape. All this denotes the song title ‘Underdog’ as this means one at a disadvantage, one to fail. I feel that the background connotes this as the used of the dirty and tatty effect on the paper make me think of cheap, dirty, and nothing of an advantage, and so this connotes the meaning of ‘Underdog’.

There aren’t any people in this advert. It’s just a concept advert with just words and information about the band and their new album/ digi-pack and some images of leaves falling into the advert.

This advert may appear in various music magazines that are based on this genre of music. Such as NME, Kerrang and Q. this is perfect for this advert to be noticed by its target audience, as the target audience would like this type of music, which is the main feature in these magazines. Also this advert may appear on the bands website too as this is a modern way to advertise music as the Internet is becoming more and more popular.
