Final Advert.

This is our final advert created on publisher.

Audience Response.

We asked our Target Audience the following questions:

1) Out of the four adverts, which has the most appealing font?
2) Out of the four adverts, which colour scheme is most appealing?
3) Out of the four adverts, which has the most appealing logo/ picture?
4) Out of the four adverts, which picture position is most appealing and eyecatching?

Out of a sampleof twenty-five people, the results were as follows:

1)Out of the four adverts, which has the most appealing font?

One= 9
Two= 1
Three= 7
Four= 8

2) Out of the four adverts, which colour scheme is most appealing?

One= 4
Two= 1
Three= 10
Four= 10

3) Out of the four adverts, which has the most appealing logo/ picture?

One= 5
Two= 4
Three= 10
Four= 6

4) Out of the four adverts, which picture position is most appealing and eyecatching?

One= 5
Two= 4
Three= 9
Four= 7

From this Target Audience response, we agreed that our final product would incorporate all of the most appealing aspects that were found.

-Using the colour themes from both adverts 3 and 4, the font from advert 1, the logo/picturefrom advert 3, and the logo/picture position from advert 3.

-We also agreed in our panel layout - using digi-pack 1 for the first panel, digi-pack two for the second panel and digi-pack three for both the third and fourth panels.

Group Adverts.

Now i have created my final advert as a group we brought all ours together. we will make a final group one by taking elements of all our individual adverts. but we are to bias to do this our selves.
As a group we created a series of questions to ask our target audience. The audience response results will help us choose the best parts of our adverts and therefore make the perfect advert for our digi-pack.

We took the questions and adverts to 25 of our target audience, around our school, aged 16-18 yrs old.
We numbered the adverts to make it easier for our audience to answer. (Catherine made 2)

My Final Advert

I focused on the back ground of the advert to make the wording stand out more. A good background will help give the whole advert more of an appealing look, like the adverts I deconstructed earlier. I will focus on the adverts i deconstructed and take elements of their background and incorporate it into my advert.

I used publisher to create this advert. I used paint to create some images to blend and merge in the background. i also used the bands recognisable logo . The polariods in the background blended with the shoe logo are taken from the actual digi pack accompanied witha heart i made on paint, to represent the feel of the digi-pack, Love and relationships.

I found it easy to use publisher on the the school computers, as they are windows. i struggled to use publisher file at home as i had to convert the file into a powerpoint file to be able to use it. but overall it was very easy to use this software to create my advert.
Building up my advert gradually also helped me get more and more familiar with the software. You can tell as my final advert has images merged and blended into the background, which is a new editing skill i have learnt through creating my digi-pack and advert.

Advert Draft

I decided to change the back ground using repetition of my logo I created for my digi pack. I used powerpoint and publisher to construct my adverts.
This is my second draft.

I feel that the repetition in this make it look amateur . The font and wording layout works very well. This is similar to the YouMeAtSix advert I deconstructed.

Advert Draft

Using the mind map I began to create my advert.
I used the logo from my digi pack as the main part as this would be familiar for the audience as it would become a well recognised symbol/ logo for the band and their music. I also took into account most of the features on my deconstructed adverts, such as the size of the advert and particularly the layout.
I used the computer for all of my advert. i used paint to enhance some parts of the image.
Firstly I created a draft/ mock up of my design.

I felt that this advert was lacking in depth. The background was too plain and mono tone.

Advert Mind Map.

From my deconstruction I created a mind map showing the similarities I found in both my adverts. This will then help me create my own advert. Using the mind map will help me make sure my advert fits with in the genre we have chosen. Also it will help create an advert that advertises our digi-pack well.

Advert Deconstruction 2.

Kids in GlassHouses
Advert Deconstruction

There aren’t any stereotypes being represented in imagery, as there aren’t images of people. But the whole concept is stereotypical to the genre that this band falls into. The back ground is a dirty colour which often occurs on this genres adverts or album colours. I feel this connotes the feeling of not caring and an element of freedom and lack of manufactured influence.

The advert is in colour. The colours used are uniform to the advert; red is used through out along with black text. This is a very common colour code for adverts that are associated with music of this genre. Red connotes a feel of fear, anger and being alert or alerted; this is just like the style of music this band plays. The music is about things that are feared, or make people angry, e.g. girls and loving them ECT. Black represents the dark time and subjects in the lyrics of there songs. Also black is used just to make the text clear and easy to read.

The leaves on the edge of some parts of the advert are just in the ad and have been cropped to just appear on the edge. They are a deep red and have lots of detail making them stand out. The leaves make the ad look like it has been found amongst leaves on the ground. This denotes the title ‘Dirt’. The advert looks as though it is found on the floor like dirty is often found.

The leaves and the flowers contrast the word ‘dirt’, dirt is a horrible thing and isn’t pretty, and to then render the word with something that is deemed as pretty and angelic, flowers, is a strong way to show a contrast.

This advert is addressing anyone who likes this particular band, and anyone whole would be interested in purchasing this bands music. The advert addresses every type of person to. From people that buy hard copies of music on CD to anyone who uses iTunes and such computer software to download digital versions of artists music.

The background of the advert is an off white colour, almost dirty of tea stained in effect. The background has lines in it too. Some are more definite than others giving the effect of crinkled paper. This effect denotes a sense of wear, caused over time or constant use. I feel this links with the word ‘Kids’ as children use things that then become worn and dirty.

The advert promises the viewer/ audience that the music will be out to purchase on the date stated on the advert near the bottom. It also promises that the hard copy and digital copies are available to purchase to. Many promises are made by this advert, plus a promise to receive signed versions of the CD if preordered, this is very good to get some sales before release and therefore entices the potential customers.

The power of this advert comes from the title of the music. This is because the word used for the title, ‘Dirt’ is a very strong word in its self. This word can mean and denote many different things from the literal meaning of the earth’s surface, to being unclean. Also the meaning is slightly powerful but as this word is larger than all the other text and has a brighter colour it makes this word stand out from everything else, which therefore gives it it’s power.

This advert may appear in various music magazines that are based on this genre of music. Such as NME, Kerrang and Q. this is perfect for this advert to be noticed by its target audience, as the target audience would like this type of music, which is the main feature in these magazines. Also this advert may appear on the bands website too as this is a modern way to advertise music as the Internet is becoming more and more popular.

Advert Deconstruction.

Now as a group we need to create an advert. This advert needs to advertise and inform people of our digi-pack.
Firstly we will individually research existing digi- pack adverts of our chosen genre. I have chosen to deconstruct 2 adverts from a leading magazine dedicated to this genre of music, 'Kerrang'.

YouMeAtSix
Advert Deconstruction.

The person in the advert is a middle-aged man with wings. They are white Caucasian, even though this is a black and white image of the male it is clear he is Caucasian. The male is middle class. I can tell this, as he looks smart with his trench coat and white top, this is to smart for the stereotypical lower class citizen. But this is also not smart enough for a stereotypical upper class citizen.

The clothing codes tell me that this is a stylish male, very casual but smart which is the fashion for men these days, this shows me that this is a current to date image. You can’t see a facial expression on the male in the advert as he has his head down. But judging from the title and the fact he is like this makes me think that he is upset/ down about something, most likely the fact that he is the underdog. His posture contributes and connotes the underdog title, as the male isn’t centered of facing forward, also he is looking down which shows a sense of embarrassment or being ashamed.

Stereotypes being represented are the smart casually dressed indie boy. This is a stereotype as this image of the male shows him clothing, which is the style of a stereotypical listener of this genre of music.

The whole advert is in colours but the person on the left is in black and white, which makes him stand out. Also the lack of colours in the person connotes the title of the song, as being dull in colour is the meaning behind underdog, as the underdog has nothing over the top dog, and in this case the underdog isn’t even in colour. The leaves and flowers in the top corner have been cropped to look as though they are over growing on to the advert. This makes the black and white figure look even duller; emphasizing the meaning behind the song title.

All the elements of the advert are in focus, and are all visible. The background has a lot of arrows in the background and some are faded/blurred a little. I feel this is connoting being an underdog, and blending into the background and not standing out; which is a good contrast to the leaves and flowers in the top corner being colourful and proponent.

There is no real issue or reasoning behind the lighting of the image, as this image isn’t a photograph, it’s a cartoon/ drawing. So the lighting is just normal standard lighting being shown on the trousers of the male and to highlight the features on his wings ECT.

The title of the song relates to the pictures very well as the flowers and leaves are a contrast to the meaning of the title. Also the male figure is clearly connoting the title of the song very well.

This advert is addressing anyone who likes this genre of music and this particular band. I can tell this as the bands name is in a very large typeface compared to the other words, to make it stand out. Also this advert is addressing anyone who uses modern technology to get music, as there is information on how to download this song on software called ITunes, which is a modern way of getting music.

The typefaces used are all the same colour to keep some consistency flowing through the advert making it look uniformed and professional. Also the title of the song is in the same font that features on many of this band singles.

The product doesn’t appear in the advert as the actual product is a song and so cannot be illustrated in this advert. So a small amount of vital information is featured on the advert about how to get the song and where to get it from.

The background and colour signify a sense of being old and tatty and maybe even dirty. This is shown thought the use of the discolored paper effect as the background with the band name on other paper attached with what looks like tape. All this denotes the song title ‘Underdog’ as this means one at a disadvantage, one to fail. I feel that the background connotes this as the used of the dirty and tatty effect on the paper make me think of cheap, dirty, and nothing of an advantage, and so this connotes the meaning of ‘Underdog’.

There aren’t any people in this advert. It’s just a concept advert with just words and information about the band and their new album/ digi-pack and some images of leaves falling into the advert.

Final Digi-Pack.

This is Our final group Digi-Pack.

YouMeAtSix Digi-Pack Decon.

To create Our overall group digi-pack we took the audience response results into account. but we felt as a group it would a good idea to briefly analyse existing digi-packs for the band, who's song we are using.

Catherine had done hers first and I felt that I should do the same to help. We took the images of the digi-packs and explained various parts. This shall help us further with our Final group digi- Pack.

Debut Digi_pack cover for You Me At Six. Has a colour wheel with darker circle over the top. With a wider copy of the design around it in a stained effect. I feel this connotes that the bands music is new but has emerged from the old style to one of its own.
The bands name and logo is large and has a mixture of bold and normal font, Being white is a contrast to the rest of the cover, making it standout. This connotes innocence.

Newest Digi-pack covers for You Me At Six. Has a merging image of many things on the front. It has a bouquet of flowers clouds and mountains merged with wings and a faint silhouette of a man. Bands name looks as thought it has been taped on, giving a nostalgic look which contrasts with the clouds and mountains that connote the band creating their own style.

The bouquet representing the fact that most of the song are about love.

Audience Response. Digi-Packs

Out of a sample of 20, the results were as follows;

1) Which Digi-pack appeals to you the most?

One=9
Two=5
Three=6

2) Which Digi-pack has the most appealing colour theme?

one= 9
Two= 6
Three=5

3) Which Digi-pack has the most appealing font?

One=7
Two=5
Three=8

4) Which Digi-pack has the most appealing front logo?

One=7
Two=6
Three=7

5) Which Digi-pack has the most appealing back cover?

One=9
Two=6
Three=5

6) From each Digi-pack, which is its most appealing inside/back panel(s)?

1 2 3 4
One= 10 10 0 0 =20
Two= 2 14 2 2 =20
Three= 6 0 6 8 =20

From this Target Audience response, we agreed that our final product would incorporate all of the most appealing aspects that were found.

-Using the colour theme from digi-pack 1, the font from digi-pack 3, both logo's from 1 and 3, and the back cover from 1.

-We also agreed in our panel layout - using digi-pack 1 for the first panel, digi-pack 2 for the second panel and digi-pack 3 for both the third and fourth panels.

Audience Responce. Digi-Packs.

As a group we gathered all our digi-packs together and took then round to our 20 of our target audience and asked them a few simple questions about each one.
we asked 20 students at our school aged between 16-18yrs old.
As a group we created 6 questions to be asked. The questions will then allow us to choose the best parts from each digi-pack, we have made individually, to then incorporate in to our final group digi-Pack.

Here are the questions we created:

1) Which Digi-pack appeals to you the most?
2) Which Digi-pack has the most appealing colour theme?
3) Which Digi-pack has the most appealing font?
4) Which Digi-pack has the most appealing front logo?
5) Which Digi-pack has the most appealing back cover?
6) Which Digi-pack has the most appealing 3 inside panels?

We then numbered each digi-pack to make it easier to answer and conclude later on.

Digi-Pack 3

My Final Digi-Pack.

This is my final digi-pack.

My Digi-Pack Panels.

I will now begin constructing my 6 paneled digi-pack.
I scanned the sketch in to my computer and used a paint software to go over the lines to create a more defined edge.
I then used some editing with in the new paint software on apple to create different versions of the first sketch.

Changing Names.

I then chose where to place these on my digi-pack, panel by panel.
After i filled the rest of the panels with other things, like Polaroid's with performance images on taken by me at a gig, i decided to change the names of the songs of YouMeAtSix's album.

Original album song names:
Disc 1
The Truth Is A Terrible Thing

Jealous Minds Think Alike
Save It For The Bedroom
Take Off Your Colours

Always Attract
Nasty Habits
The Rumour

Disc 2
Kiss And Tell
Finders Keepers
Sweet Feet
All Your Fault
Blue Eyes Don't Lie
Kiss And Tell (Video)

Walk You Off (video by us!)

My Digi-Pack Planning.

From our group mind map on the generic features in a digi-pack for our genre, we each created our own digi-packs.

Firstly i realised that there isnt actually a set code to how a digi pack should be set out ect. for this genre. so i pretty much have quite alot of freedom.
A group mood board, I felt, further confirmed this.

This is a mood board that we did as a group to help us make our own Digi pack designs to then be able to make our final digi-pack.

This mood board shows me that there isn’t a generic colour scheme or layout for this genre of music’s Digi Packs.

Most of them have the bands name or album title as a contrasting colour to make it stand out.

I will take this into account when making mine.

I thought of some typical items that represent this genre and its listeners. i came up with a simple list:

Bass Guitar
Electric Guitar
Drums
Mic
Skating
Skate wear
Skate Shoes

From this list i chose the most common and iconic stereo typical representation of this genre. i chose skate shoes. then i realized that the most common shoe is a pair of converses of vans.
I then sketched 2 images of these shoes incorporating our bands name and album title. (the names we chose as a group earlier) YouMeAtSix to MeYou&Her.

I showed my fellow group member and they helped me decide which sketch should be the main logo for my digi-pack. we came to a mutual decision to choose the bottom one.

Mind Map.

From my deconstruction's I created a mind- map of all the similarities I came across between the two digi-packs. This will help me to make my own digi-pack, which shall then help my group and I create our final digi-pack design.

The mind map will help my group and I create a larger mind-map of the generic features of a digi pack of this genre.

Digi-Pack Deconstruction.

OPM Front Cover

The front cover is a cartoon of man sitting on a pavement edge behind a police car on a street of houses. There is a bottle next to him. This bottle is most likely to be a bottle of alcohol. I know this as the word sobriety is used in the album name which is linked with alcohol and being sober.
The album title links well with the image as the man on the pavement edge is smiling but it’s more of a grin. This could be linking to the word menace, as it’s a cheeky smile hiding mischief, typical of a ‘menace’. But also ‘Menace’ is usual someone who commits crimes and disturbs other which is a reason to be involved with the police, so the use of a police car in the cover links to this very well.
The overall album name means…
the colours used are very simple and bright. The style of print is grainy making it look as though it has been quickly drawn. Even by a child, this denotes a sense of childishness, which is very common for misbehavior and acts of a menace.

OPM Inside Cover1

There are 4 men on the inside. Three offset to the left, but close together showing their relationship, as being together, friends, colleagues, which is appropriate as they are the band members. The band member in the front must be the lead singer as he is wearing a bright red top, which stands out, he is brought forward to show his importance compared with his other band members behind him.
They look in there early 30’s late 20’s. They are all Caucasian. The band members and skater represent the stereotypical characteristics of a listener for this genre of music. They are casually dressed, located in a skate park and have tattoos and piercings, also the man on the skateboard isn’t wearing a top. All theses elements show them to be carefree and almost daring. It’s daring in a way to get a tattoo as its permanent also daring to skateboard with no protection especially with out a top on.

The main focus of this is the band members on the left; their facial expressions are blank, no smile just staring in to the camera. The member furthest back isn’t even looking the right way and has sunglasses, again denoting the carefree feel to the attitude and representation of this band.

It’s in colour. The colours used aren’t of a certain code or theme, but they are bright which makes the side stand out when opened.

The frame is tilted to the left; this adds a little more differentiation to the image. Also contributes to the carefree element of this image, not caring that the camera is exactly straight and up right ECT. Almost portraying laziness.

OPM Inside Cover2

The image is a close up of a women’s cleavage in a colourful stripy bikini top. She has a necklace on saying OPM, the name of the band who has created the album.
The woman in the picture isn’t old and is middle aged. I can tell this, as there are no wrinkles so they’re not old, it wouldn’t be a child because that’s illegal.
The colours on the bikini top are bright which makes the image stand out even more. This ties in with the colourfulness of the front cover and other inside image.
The portrayal of women from this image is one that they aren’t very respected. I get this impression, as her face isn’t shown so you only see her cleavage, which is all that matters in this image this is degrading to women.
This image is used well though, the sight of a colourful cleavage isn’t something that is expected and so it stands out a lot and then you see the OPM necklace, keeping you informed that this is to promote the band.
Stereotypes are for filled with this image. As it’s of a women this shows that men are being targeted. The sight of this would be pleasing to a male. This is typical of a rock band, liking women especially for their bodies.
Carefree attitude is connoted here too. The blatant focus on the women’s bust shows they don’t care about the portrayal of women.

OPM Back Cover

The back cover has the band members on too. Again with the lead member more towards the front, showing his importance over the other two in the band. They are in the same order as on the inside part of the digi-pack. The member at the back is again not facing the camera, as if he doesn’t care.
They are offset to left as in the inside part of the digi-pack. This adds some common occurrence in terms of layout through out the covers and inside.
The facial expressions again aren’t ones of joy anger or sadness, one member looks slightly puzzled, another is fairly blank and the final member isn’t looking at the camera. All these expressions aren’t abiding by the stereotypical image that is usually portrayed on any artist’s album. This band looks as though they don’t care. This again links in with the attitude shown by the band on the inside, representing a carefree attitude.

This image shows the band members wearing the same colour and standing close together, this immediately shows their relationship, and they are clearly the band.

The background is a horrible salmon colour with a blurred and faded image of some sort of architectural form. This may be denoting the carefree attitude seen through out. I think this as; the image is blurred meaning it’s not that important. Also the little you can make out of the background suggests they are out of place. They don’t seem to be located in the typical place for a band of this genre, like on the first inside image. They aren’t on a skate ramp, in a studio, or on a stage ECT. This may be connoting their style of music, as maybe not being the usual stereotypical rock/indie bands style of music.

There is a barcode on this cover and some information about the recording company, producers and copyright information, along with the usual, list of song that is on the album. The information about the corporate side of the album is the same simple font and colour as the song titles. This again keeps a certain code on this cover. This is where repetition can be of advantage, but in this case it isn’t. Same font for the 2 aspects on this side confuses me a little as the song words aren’t as proponent as they should be as this is surely what the consumer wants to know about most. So if I were to do this I would have changed to font of the song words to stand out more over the corporate information.

Digi-Pack Deconstruction.

Offspring Front Cover

There aren’t any people in the front cover. There is just a simple picture of a skull on fire in a yellow circle. It’s more of a symbol/logo for the band, rather than having the band on the front. This logo is for filling the stereotypes of people who listen to rock, as the music is dark and the listen are often seen as depressed and angry and a skull is a dark concept and fire can represent anger.

The illustration is in colour. I think this is to help make the front eye-catching to potential buyers. Also the colours clash, they are also very simple and bold adding to the idea of attracting the customer and standing out on the shelf. The image is in focus and the lines are very definite with a shadow behind to make it stand out again. Also the image is a cartoon rather than a realistic sketch or a photograph. There is no detail in the image making it simple, which is good for making it easy to recognise if displayed on any other Offspring product.

The slogan is the album title. This is related to the image as the image represents the band and this is a digi-pack by the band Offspring. The title of the band is given towards the top of the front to let people know what the image is about and whom it is representing. Also the positioning of the bands name at the top makes it easier to understand whom the music is by as this is the most common place for vital information to be positioned on anything.

The typeface being used is 3D and very large. This is to stand out from other digi-packs. It’s also to help the title, to be easy to read from far away to attract potential buyers. The font is very much like a tattoo sort of style, with the uneven lines and subtle flicks, this is a very good font as most stereotypical rock lovers have tattoos. This is a good way to link the band to the listeners.

Offspring Inside 1

There are no people in this side of the digi-pack either. Again it’s a cartoon image of a man. The man looks adult but young in there twenties. He is Caucasian and wearing a baseball cap. It is only a head on a screw. The band could have been done in cartoon on here instead but I think this didn’t happen as this is making it more simple and similar to the front cover.

The image isn’t directly for filing stereotypes of the genre, but it is suggesting a stereotype of people with sports caps on, usually skaters who usually listen to this genre of music. The man in the image is representing a person in the band and also the listeners can recognise that.

The fact the picture is of a man attached to a screw is very strange. I feel this shows the bands quirky and slightly odd side. As there music has funny lyrics and strange non-stereotypical videos, and this image isn’t a common one for a digi-pack of this genre.

The background and layout is the same as the front to help keep the pack as linked and flowing as possible. Consistency is very good to attract and keep the audience interested and not confused. There is a colour change too in the circle to add some subtle differentiation to keep the inside as interesting as possible. Repetition can be boring.

Offspring Inside 2

In this side of the digi-pack there aren’t any people in the image, as in photograph of the band or anyone. There is just a black background with a silhouette of a person with shaggy hair and glowing orange eyes.
The main image of the silhouette is forest to the right. This gives a sense abnormality and quirkiness, clearly illustrated by the unusual and slightly scary image.
The use of orange with black makes the images stand out. The glowing eyes denote an element of fear and darkness, with a hint of humour. The fear and darkness is shown through the dark background. The silhouette with out a face, and just glowing eyes represents the fear. No face in the image creates a feeling of the unknown, which is usually the source of fear. But this is simply counteracted by the fact that the image is a cartoon and isn’t real. This adds a bit of humour to the dark and simple image.

Offspring Back Cover

On this side the colour scheme of the front has been kept. The layout and shapes used have been kept too. This makes the front and the back link and flow well together. But the stop the repetition and keep the digi-pack interesting there is an unusual shape in it, very different to the front. The centre almost looks like the ending of an explosion. This is mostly likely connoting the ending of the digi-pack and relating it to an image illustration the end of something big, and an album is a big thing to a band.

The song list is written going around the circle in the middle. This is most likely to make the whole layout flow and its simply keeping the back interesting my changing up the usual list of songs. The colours used in the writing are simple, just white and yellow. These colours keep to the colour theme trough out the digi-pack, of white, fiery colours contrasted with dark colours to make the fiery tones stand out more.

To the left there is some small print, which states some information about the record company producing it. This area is space for the company to promote their work and let the buyers see how and where the album has come from and who has helped the band make their music available to buy. This section is like the contact details and background info of where the product was created. Just like the info on where bouts a certain meat product comes from and from which country and farm. This makes the consumer feel more in the know and more able to understand the background of the music.

The layout is very simple, all the most important parts are centred and easy to see and read. But they are still well presented to not be too predictable to keep it interesting.

There is also a space for the barcode.

Choosing Genre.

Firstly as a group we chose a genre from a long list we created. we chose from genres like pop, drum & bass, Hip- Hop and rock. we all had are own preferences. i preferred hip hop where as catherine didn't really mind rock or pop and harriet wanted indie as our chosen genre. to decide we placed all our own preferences in to a hat and picked one each 3 times and the most reoccurring genre was our chosen one. from this Rock was our chosen genre.

From this we began to research individually the genre.
I started by deconstructing and analyzing 2 digi- packs from my chosen genre.
i chose Offspring- Conspiracy Of One and OPM- Menace To Sobriety.
